Lyons to consider allowing tiny homes to help with housing shortage

“We are looking at creative solutions to our housing shortage.”

The Lyons Board of Trustees will take up a proposed ordinance Monday that would allow for a limited number of “tiny homes” in residential areas in town.

The draft ordinance, which is set for first hearing, dictates that, initially, no more than 10 such homes will be allowed in town limits, and once that limit is reached, the town will review the effect of the homes on the town before any more are allowed.

Lyons Mayor Connie Sullivan said it’s never a sure thing but the proposed ordinance will likely pass first reading on Monday and be set for a public hearing without much discussion by the board. After a public hearing, the board will vote on the ordinance a second time and possibly enact it.

Sullivan said the tiny homes discussion originated with an ordinance the board has already passed allowing for accessory dwelling units in town. At the time, tiny homes were discussed but not included in the ordinance.

“We are looking at creative solutions to our housing shortage,” Sullivan said. “We’ve had a lot of success with our accessory dwelling unit ordinance. We’ve had several ADUs built.”
