URGENT: Tell Lawmakers to Give Coloradans A Clean Slate

This weekend, the Colorado Senate will vote on budget allocations for the state's General Fund. Funding for Clean Slate needs to be prioritized in the budget or the bill won't pass.

What is the Clean Slate Act?

Many types of non-violent criminal records are eligible for sealing under Colorado law, yet the process leaves people behind. For many households, the stigma of a record needlessly creates ongoing obstacles to long-term employment, education, affordable housing, and family well-being.

The Clean Slate Act will remove needless barriers that exist for over a million Coloradans to getting back to work. Automatic record sealing for individuals who have completed all their sentence requirements and stayed out of trouble gets workers back on the job and reduces the odds of reoffending.

You can leave a respectful voice message at any time of day.

Here are a few facts to remember when you call:

  1. 3 out of 10 Coloradans are burdened with a record which prohibits their ability to find work and support themselves and their families.
  2. 72% of Coloradans support legislation to automatically seal eligible criminal records of individuals who are convicted of a non- violent offense IF the person has completed their sentence, completed a waiting period of several years, and has not committed another criminal offense.
  3. The Clean Slate Initiative (SB22-099) is supported by over 70 organizations and over 30 businesses and passed unanimously out of the Senate Judiciary committee.
  4. 6 other states have passed Clean Slate bills, making their workforce more competitive. Utah passed the legislation unanimously.
  5. An estimated $4.45 billion aggregate annual earnings are lost in Colorado due to people being burdened by clearable convictions.
